HEMSWELL COURT WEDDING GUIDE
As a Lincolnshire based wedding photographer, I get the opportunity to photograph at many wedding venues not only in Lincolnshire but throughout the UK.
There are so many great venue choices out there for every taste and often you are reliant on the venue providing you with their own perspective of their venue. Now don’t get me wrong this is great however when writing this article I wanted to offer an independent view and something a little different for couples seeking their perfect wedding venue.
Having photographed a Hemwsell Court wedding on many occasions and also my work being featured in the national magazine To Have and To Hold. I have an in-depth knowledge of what it can offer and hope to provide you with a wedding photographers unique perspective of this fantastic historic venue.

Hemswell Court Wedding Venue
Attending an Hemwell Court Wedding is a real pleasure and having photographed many over the years it has enabled me to have established a great insight into this wonderful and bespoke wedding venue.
Located approximately 10 miles north of Lincoln just off from the A15 and situated within the quiet village of Hemswell Cliff. This is a beautiful Georgian styled venue.
Hemswell Court is full of character with an abundance of fine wonderful furnishings delivered to a high standard and surrounded by my gorgeous woodland and formal gardens. It really is a fabulous place to host your wedding.
Hemswell Court was once used as the officers quarters during WWII. Located close to the former RAF Hemswell base there is a real sense of nostalgia when visiting this area and building. The venue was later notably used for the famous film of the Dambusters.
WEDDING CEREMONY OPTIONS
Where Can I Have My Ceremony?
The venue itself can hold up to 200 people which is large enough to cater for most wedding guess lists and is an exclusive use venue when you book. The venue already includes a wedding licence and with an experienced team headed by Shaun, you won’t go far wrong.
One of the advantages included as part of a Hemswell Court wedding package is to have your ceremony held either inside or outside in the fabulous bandstand. A truly unique setting.
The Drawing Room
This has to be one of my favourite rooms. With wonderful furniture and decor, it’s one of the locations in which a civil wedding ceremony can take place. This room can either be light and airy with its large windows or fantastically romantic when the curtains are closed and the candlelit walkway is created for the bride to walk down the aisle, simply wonderful and very classy.
If you are looking to make the most of the fine weather Hemswell Court are licenced to allow marriages in their bandstand. This is located in their stunning gardens directly opposite the main entrance and is a great option to consider for summer weddings.
A Church Wedding
If a civil ceremony is not your thing then using Hemswell Court for your reception is a good option. As it is located close to several major towns including Lincoln, Market Rasen and Gainsborough, in turn, it provides an abundance of churches on the doorstep for you to consider getting married at.
The closest churches to Hemswell court include:
- St Chads Church, Harpswell
- All Saints Church, Hemswell
- St Edmunds Chapel
- St Michael’s Church, Glentworth
The Grand Hall
As you enter the building you will be greeted by the Grand Hall, a wonderful Georgian Style exterior with large doors with enough room to welcome your wedding guests on their arrival from the fantastic gravel driveway and amazing mature Gardens.
This area makes for an impressive entrance for your guests and is the perfect location to hold a drinks reception and to taste the incredible canapes on offer.
The Primrose Room
This is where many guests who have larger wedding parties congregate have their wedding breakfast it’s a magnificent room large open windows looking onto the gardens with its feature fireplace it’s a spectacular location for any event.
This room is a grand setting for when you start your wedding breakfast speeches photographs extremely well with a floodlight coming from the windows beautifully light and airy imagery.
The Dining Room
Dining room joins onto main drawing room and it’s a great place to hold your wedding breakfast if your wedding features a smaller number of guests with lovely French furniture create A Touch of Class and Elegance and again is a great place to take the photographs from the wedding
WEDDING GUEST ACCOMMODATION

The bridal suite is a real touch of luxury spacious with a wonderful ensuite. It provides plenty of space for the Bride or Groom to get ready along with the bridesmaids, best man and groomsmen.
Other Guest Accommodation options:

GETTING MARRIED AT HEMSWELL COURT
A Wedding Day Breakdown
So what’s it really like getting married at Hemswell Court?
Well as a wedding photographer with over 15 years experience and living fairly close it is a venue I can highly recommend. The staff, lead by Shaun, are excellent at making your day special and are very experienced at wedding functions. Here’s a little overview of what it’s like to get married there…
Taking the stress and strain away from your wedding day is always something you want to consider as you go through the planning process. One of the things that I find cuts into the wedding day and can sometimes add unnecessary stress is travelling between different locations ie getting ready at one and getting married at another.
If you were to stay at Hemswell court and get ready there this would really help. There are a number of rooms for you and your guests to get ready but the bridal suite is particularly nice. It’s very light and airy with plenty of space to move around and can be a wonderful place to capture stunning wedding photographs.
The Wedding Ceremony
Whilst there are a couple of options when it comes to the ceremony, my firm favourite has definitely got to be the Drawing Room. With the large fireplace as the focal point and large windows that flood with light along with the amazing period furniture it really is a classy place to tie the knot.
The room is great for ceremonies all year round and is particularly nice when the curtains are drawn and the candles are lit making it a truly romantic experience for you and your wedding guests.
What about Confetti?
I always love capturing confetti photographs for my clients it is always a fun experience for you and your guests and can make for some really natural-looking images.
Confetti is no problem at the venue and one of the best options is for your guests to gather on the stairs at the main entrance as you exit. It’s a great backdrop for the building and can lead nicely into some group photos.
There are a couple of options when it comes to group photographs at Hemswell Court. The first is incorporating the amazing historical facade into the photographs as your guests gather on the steps to the main entrance. The second option is to capture photographs within the stunning grounds or why not have a combination of the two for variety in your wedding album and wall prints.
I spend the vast majority of my time on the wedding day capturing natural images of my couples and their guests with me tucking myself away in the background. However, I love to spend a little time through the day creating something a little extra special that will wow my clients.
Creating couples portraits is a nice time of the day where the bride and groom can spend a little moment with each other away from their guests to create something a little special.
The Wedding Breakfast
One of the true luxuries of holding your wedding at Hemswell Court what is the incredible food produced by Sean the head chef and his team. Having photographed many weddings here over the years I’ve experienced first-hand the consistency and quality and what’s produced from the kitchen always hearing great comments from wedding guests.
Cutting The Wedding Cake
Most couples tend to cut the wedding cake just before their first dance. This allows for any invited wedding guests to be part of the experience. Depending on the size of your wedding will depend on the best place for this however for larger weddings this is normally done in the Ballroom.
The Evening Reception
Another function room that doubles up ideally for a dance floor for your evening guests is the ballroom. A spacious area to accommodate many of your guests to boogie the night away. With a convenient bar located close by it’s a favourite for many. Having photographed many weddings here I can say that the lighting and sound setup provided is fantastic and creates a great atmosphere for guests. It is always a great place and opportunity to capture those dance shots of you and your wedding guests.

Gorgeous Wedding Artwork
The grounds and gardens are a particular feature for Hemswell Court. As you drive into the grounds with the spectacular Hemswell Court building on your right-hand side to your left there is a large area of formal Gardens with mature trees shrubbery and grass walk around and mingle with your guests in the fair weather.
Inside of the grounds hidden away is a little gem of a bandstand which again can be used for outside civil ceremonies offering great versatility for your wedding day. A recent addition within the grounds is a little swing attached to a large mature tree. This is such a wonderfully unique feature that you can make use of for your wedding photographs.
I recently had the pleasure of being approached to work in collaboration with Hemswell Court and other wedding industry professionals to photograph a feature for the National wedding magazine To Have and To Hold.
You can check out their article and other Hemswell Court wedding photographs below.
HEMSWELL COURT WEDDING FAYRE
Meet The Suppliers
When it comes to weddings a great option is to attend a Hemswell Court wedding fayre. Like many venues, you will have a host of suppliers you can chat to about their services, see the products up close and experience the venue as it would be set up for a wedding day.
A wedding fayre is a great starting point for finding the suppliers that are right for you but my advice is to always expand your research beyond as there are many great talented suppliers who choose not to attend the fayre but rather stay with an online presence.
